Rainforest Concern is supporting Remobilise’s efforts to encourage national recycling of used mobile phones. Funds raised from recycling are being used to purchase or secure land in the rainforests of South America where thousands of square miles of rainforest are being destroyed each year. Forests account for 80% of the CO2 exchanged between the land and the atmosphere and yet deforestation accounts for at least 20% of global CO2 emissions each year.
By securing and protecting these endangered habitats, all those who donate their old phone to the recycling campaign will be contributing to the conservation of forests containing a wealth of habitats, ecosystems and wildlife, with many species yet to be discovered.
For those who are able to recycle larger volumes of handsets (10 handsets or more), you will be able to contribute towards offsetting your own personal or corporate emissions through the campaign. Rainforest Concern will acknowledge your support by issuing a Carbon Credited certificate calculated in tonnes of CO2 emissions. The amount of tonnes offset will depend of the number of handsets recycled and the amount of carbon that can be conserved or sequestered as a result.
